Do you ever scroll through Instagram, see jaw-dropping photos, and wonder, “How do they even do that?”

You’ve got the camera. Maybe even spent thousands on it. But your shots come out blurry. The exposure is off. You’re constantly fiddling with settings, second-guessing yourself, and missing the moment entirely. Eventually, you just switch it to Auto, hold the shutter, and hope for the best.

And when that still doesn’t work, it hits:
“Maybe I’m just not cut out for this.”
“Maybe I don’t have the eye, the talent, the magic they do.”

I know how that feels—because I’ve been there too.

Here’s the truth: photography is accessible, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. Most people never learn how to truly see, let alone shoot intentionally. I spent years fumbling through trial and error before I figured out how to turn snapshots into stories—images with impact, emotion, and craft.

But you don’t have to learn the hard way.

Let me walk you through what took me over a decade to master as a travel photographer—and the insights I’ve been teaching to millions on YouTube for the last 5 years.

No fluff. No jargon. Just the essentials that will transform how you shoot, see, and create.

Everything I've learnt from no experience, to being successful enough to win awards, get recognised as a Sony Digital Imaging Ambassador, and working with every Fortune 500 brand I've ever wanted to.

I'll take you with me step-by-step

Each day over 30 days, we'll take it one day at a time together. I'll guide you through everything; camera basics, composition, lighting, visual patterns, genres, gear and more. Everything you need to go from absolute novice to confident in any genre of photography.

Logical, efficient progression

By teaching and amassing over 300,000 subscribers on YouTube teaching photography, I've learnt a lot about what beginner photographers need when learning photography for the first time. You can rest assured that I spent a lot of time thinking about the sequencing of the 30 days in a logical and efficient way. Every class builds on the next.

Get out there and know what to do

In addition to each lesson, we'll be doing our homework. Photography is a practice, after all, so we'll be doing just that. Don't worry, I won't ramp it up too much to start with, but by the end, you'll know your way around a camera like you were born to do it.

Our students learn, fast.

Take it at your own pace. 30 days, faster, or slower.

Ready to capture the best photos of your life?

You're just 30 days away from a whole new level of photography skill and confidence.

Hey, I'm Pat Kay.

I’ve been in the creative industry for over 20 years—designing products, experiences, and websites, and capturing moments on camera. I'm a lifelong adventurer, obsessed with documenting the world as I see it and sharing what I’ve learned along the way. With a background as a Lead Product and UX Designer, I’ve developed a unique way of seeing and capturing the world—and I’d love to show you how.

Why I made this...

When it comes to learning any skill, leveraging a mentor is one of the fastest and most effective ways to level-up.

Mentors have experience. They’ve have successes and they know what works, they’ve pushed past failures and know what to avoid; they’ve already navigated the road you’re looking at going down yourself and this experience is invaluable.

After almost 2 decades of being a creative across many different disciplines, every time I learn a new creative skillset, I always try to look for mentors because I know how effective it can be. However when I first started photography, I didn’t have one, and I wish I did; especially considering just how deep and wide this fantastic visual art can be.

And that’s the perspective to which I built this course. I had the question: “if I had a photography mentor when I was first starting, what would I learn? And how would I learn it?”

This course is the answer to that. It’s me, mentoring you.

It’s me teaching you the skillset that has landed me sponsorships and opportunities with almost every fortune 500 brand I've ever wanted to work with.

It’s the skillset that is the foundation of how I was able to go pro in photography.

But most importantly, it’s the skillset that’s unique to my perspective and my background; one that’s deeply rooted in not just photography, but in many creative disciplines and a comprehensive understanding of visual art and its methods, history, and perspectives, learned over decades.

In this course you’ll not only be able to learn how to use the camera, but you’ll also learn how to see the world as a photographer; how to gain a creative vision; a unique perspective. You’ll learn a holistic view of photography rather than a singular perspective, and I’ll also set you up for success in many of the auxiliary sub-skills you’ll need to learn along the way too.

This is the most comprehensive toolkit of skills I could ever give a single person, and I can’t wait to teach it to you.

I hope to see you in the course.

~ Pat

Core focuses of the course

How to build consistency

Over 10 hours of lessons split over 30 days.

Every day features a 5 to15-minute theory lesson, followed up by a mini-assignment so that we can put what we learned into practice.

A holistic approach to photography

From technical camera skills, to conceptual compostion, mastering lighting, developing style, and everything in between, we'll learn how every aspect of photography connects with one another to give you the most solid foundation for the rest of your career.

A holistic approach to photography

From technical camera skills, to conceptual compostion, mastering lighting, developing style, and everything in between, we'll learn how every aspect of photography connects with one another to give you the most solid foundation for the rest of your career.

Master all technical camera skills

We’ll go deep into all of the technical skills you need to know for a solid foundation, then we'll gently introduce you to some of the more advanced, genre-specific techniques.

Learn the art of photography

Understand how to think and how to creatively “see” as a photographer. We’ll cover things like visual hierarchy, finding your true style, finding a purpose, and so much more.

Specialise in a specific genre of photography

We’ll talk about 15 different genres of photography and do a deep dive into the 3 most common ones so you can find the most interesting genres of photography to learn.

A preview of what we'll learn in our 30 days together

Over the 10 hours of video content, we’ll progressively learn subjects that build upon one another.

To start with, we’ll learn a lot about the technical skills that are required for good photography; what I call the “craft” of photography. We’ll talk about the best way to think about the exposure triangle, we’ll talk about hardware; sensors, lenses. We’ll talk about focus and all of the physical features of modern cameras that we have available to us in the modern age.

We’ll then go into some conversations about light, with an in-depth light study, in addition to the topic of low light that we’ll cover too.

Armed with significant knowledge about the craft of photography, we’ll then go into what I call the “art” of photography, and we’ll talk about composition, visual language and visual hierarchy, we’ll talk about developing a style and finding purpose in your art and really getting to the internal values of why we do what we do.

From there, with both art and craft in mind, we’ll then deep dive and attack the genres of photography from a holistic perspective so that we can get a broad view of how photography as a whole works, and we’ll be able to plan for which skillsets to then acquire over the coming years.

We’ll talk briefly about editing, and then we’ll end the course with many auxiliary topics to photography that are important to the experience of being a photographer. Things like location scouting and planning, back up and storage, sharing our work, creating business, and so much more.

Is $399 worth it for an online course?

Think of it this way: it’s like the cost of a single day workshop or a couple of private lessons, but here you get a whole month of structured learning from a proven photographer + the ability to rewatch anytime. Many students tell me they’ve spent more than $399 on gear or random tutorials in the past, but nothing improved their photography like this course did. I truly believe in the value – and that’s why I offer a 7-day satisfaction guarantee. No risk.

Is this course really for true beginners?

Yes! We start from scratch assuming you know nothing about the technical side of photography. If you’ve never taken a photo off Auto mode, you’re in the right place. We build up gradually, so even if you have some experience, you’ll firm up your foundations and likely learn new techniques. No advanced knowledge required – just a willingness to learn.

What if I’m not able to follow it in 30 days?

You can absolutely go at your own pace. 30 days is a recommended timeline to build a routine and keep momentum, but you have lifetime access to the content. If you get busy, you can pause and resume anytime. Some students finish in 60 days due to their schedules – it’s totally okay. It'll be waiting for you whenever you're ready to come back to it.

How much time will I need each week to complete it?

Each lesson is 10-20 minutes long, plus maybe another 10-20 minutes for the exercise if you choose to do it immediately. So roughly 15-30 minutes a day. In a week, that’s around 3 hours at most. Of course, you can invest more time practicing if you have it, but the core lessons themselves are designed to fit into a busy life.

Will you cover image editing?

Definitely! While it certainly won't be as in-depth as my Lightroom Editing Masterclass, we will go through the basics of editing and the workflow of how to think about approaching editing as well.

Do I need a good camera?

Nope! Any DSLR or mirrorless camera (even an older or entry-level model) will work great, as long as it allows manual adjustments. The course content applies to all major brands (Canon, Nikon, Sony, etc.). A kit lens (the one that came with your camera) is sufficient for all exercises. You can even do many lessons with a point-and-shoot or smartphone, though a camera with manual mode is recommended to get the most out of the course.

What happens after I purchase?

After checkout, you will receive an email with instructions to create a new account.

If you didn't receive an email, please check your spam folder, or head over to learnwith.patkay.com and either create an account/sign in and your course should be there.

If you have any issues, please contact us at orders@patkay.com with your order number and issue, and we'll get on it fast.

How long does my course access last for?

Forever! The course has lifetime access across all devices.

Is there a community section?

After having trialed many different approaches to communities, I found that having an online community based around this price point doesn't make enough economical sense.

Therefore, I've recently decided to depreicate the community section for this course.

As an alternative, I offer an invite to my Discord channel, where many creatives hang out and talk about many different aspects of creativity and photography, with a far higher engagement and far more varied feedback and response.

You can find an invite link here: patkay.com/discordinvite.

In the future, there will be a Photography Mentorship program that will include a vibrant community where you'll be able to learn all sorts of things with myself and other photographers.

30 days from now, you'll be taking photos you love.

Join over 2,000+ beginners who have transformed their photography skills.

In just one month, you'll marvel at how far you've come.
